Mercer
Lake Association Formed
The
Mercer Lake Association of Iron County was created and bylaws adopted
at a July 29th meeting at the Mercer Community Center. The purpose
of the Association is to improve, preserve and protect Mercer Lake
and its surroundings, and to enhance the water quality, fishery,
boating safety and aesthetic values of Mercer Lake as a public recreational
facility.
Elected
as officers were Board President Lisa Heberling, Vice-President
Ann Baxter, Secretary Karen Pfeiffer, and Treasurer Ted Heberling.
Board Directors elected were Don Fortune, Dick Wilson, Jim Durango
and Pat Busch. Lyle Pemble was elected as Director at Large.
Guests
included Cathy Cleland, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
(WDNR) Water Resource Management Specialist and Tim Campbell, UW
Extension Community Resource Development Educator. Many educational
displays and handouts were available.
First
priority for the Association is monitoring the lake to assess its
present water quality. This will begin immediately thanks to member
volunteer Nick Keefe who will work under the guidance of Cathy Cleland
and the WDNR. After one year of monitoring, the Association will
be classified as a qualified lake association. This will make the
Association eligible to apply for planning and project grants from
the WDNR in order to develop a management plan to control and reduce
the rate of aquatic plant and algae growth in the lake.
The
members voted to join the Wisconsin Association of Lakes and to
extend Charter membership designation in the Mercer Lake Association
to those members who join before the end of the calendar year. Dues
are $20 annually and membership is open to any individual, family,
business or organization that resides or owns property within one
mile of Mercer Lake. For more information or to obtain a membership
application, contact President Lisa Heberling at 476-0477 after
6 PM or mail inquiries to: Mercer Lake Association, P.O. Box 199,
Mercer, WI 54547. There will be a board meeting on Sunday, August
26th at 1 PM at the Anchor Inn in Mercer.
